My choice of photo-related items was influenced by my desire to have uniform battery & memory platforms, and having a history with Pentax cameras.

Not listed is a snake’s nest of data cables and power cables.

Photos & specs for these items are available through Google so I won’t clutter this space with all of that.

Photo-related

  • Sigma 10-20mm lens
  • Tamron 18-200mm lens

Backup/smaller/less conspicuous camera:

  • Pentax Optio W60 waterproof camera, 28-140mm focal length (35mm equivalent), uses SD memory cards, proprietary battery

Video:

  • POV VIO 1 camera, entire unit is waterproof, uses SD memory cards and AA batteries

Camera support:

  • Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom model
  • Mini Cardellini clamp
  • Manfrotto 484 mini ballhead (attaches to both supports)

Computer

  • Asus EEE 1000HE netbook, 80GB HDD, built-in SD mem card reader, wireless network adapter. AC input accepts 100-240v AC.
  • USB drive with copies of manuals for bike & gadgets, scans of important documents.

Other battery-powered devices

  • Garmin Rino 130 (weatherproof, uses AA batteries, tiny monochrome display)
  • MP3 player, 2GB
  • Motorola v190 Quad-band cell phone & pre-paid global SIM card. Works in most countries I’ll be visiting, assuming a signal can be had. Cost per minute varies depending on where calling from/to. Uses an Estonian phone number; you can get a US-based number, but that costs some $.
  • LED headlamp (uses AA batteries)
  • LED flashlight (uses AA batteries)
  • Electric shaver (uses AA batteries…but waffling on whether to take it; I just hate to shave with a blade.)

Power

  • 4 x 4-packs Panasonic Eneloop AA batteries
  • Plus a few other NiMH batteries I have, for the low-draw LED lights, etc.
  • Powerex MHC9000 AA and AAA battery charger, uses 12v or 100-240v AC input, tons of charging options
  • Small pile of wall outlet adapters.
  • Charger & spare battery for Optio W60 (accepts 100-240v AC)
  • Small inverter, 12vdc input with 120v AC outlet and USB outlet, has auto-shutdown at low voltage to prevent battery draining

Power notes:
I considered using a 24W solar panel on the topcase for providing 12vdc for charging, but for me it turned into too much complexity and added stuff to make it happen. The DR650 electrical system has around 75 watts to spare, which will be plenty as long as I don’t get carried away running & charging every possible device simultaneously, with high beam on, running heated grips, while continuously honking my 136 dB dual-tone horn set.
